The décor may be dated but the food is delicious.

For mains we ordered the spinach ravioli, squid ink pasta with prawns, and I had the entree portion of chili prawns. My kids clearly won that one. The ravioli was well made and tasted good. My prawns were awful. The texture was mealy and soft. The spice was there, but the mealy texture and the offputting aftertaste made my dish really unpalatable. The same aioli that was on my arancini was on the plate as well and it had congealed more to a puddinglike consistency. $26 for four small shrimp.

Beautiful Location. We has a great night with a group of friends at the bar. After a fantastic Dinner. Best Pizza in town. Good wine List . This restaurant has been around over 10 yrs and they know their stuff. If you’re around Circular Quay area this is place. Reasonable price for a location such as this.

The squid ink linguini was also oddly cut. Perhaps my understanding of linguini is different but the linguini was not long and strandlike but each small piece was about 3 cm long. Again the dish was adequately spiced from a chili perspective but the shrimp were he same as what I had in my dish - mealy, soft, no char and a bad mouthfeel.

My advice - stick to entrees. maybe consider the pizza. The Shiraz they have from Barossa by the glass is good and reasonable. But I definitely did not leave there satisfied with dropping $200.

I have to question whether or not the shrimp for both dishes were thawed or just left out too long based on their texture and feel. I also would not advertise this dish as a "prawn" dish because the shrimp were at most two bite morsels.

At the end of the meal we couldn't stand for dessert. I was also a bit put out by our server. We are American. We understand the tipping rules. Everywhere in Australia we ate that had good service (the majority of the places) we added 10% as a gratuity. YA was the ONLY place at the time of our EFTPOS that asked us to add a tip. No one else in two weeks asked for a tip.

In the end I am always saddened by a bad dining experience because I see it as a missed opportunity. It's a fantastic setting. I understand Circular Quay is a massive tourist trap and that the costa of operating an establishment are high. Our dinner all in was $199 AD. This place has a lot of promise and can do so much better. But Great cooking starts with great fresh ingredients and spot on prep. Neither was display at YA.

We ordered our entrees - bread, arancini, and tomato/mozzarella salad. The bread was four grilled pieces of decent bread with olive oil and balsamic for dipping. Tasted good but not worth the $7 for only four small pieces. The arancini were well made, had a nice crispy shell and delicately soft interior with risotto and mushroom. The aioli was a good combination as well. Four pieces to the order. The tomato salad was good too and came in a portion big enough for all four of us to have a decent amount.

We turned up for dinner at YA because my family and I were aiming for another restaurant in the building but couldn't get reservations. I had high hopes because the restaurant itself is in a great location (ground floor of the Customs House) and has a cozy appeal to its dining arrangement. It was a Monday night so not terribly crowded but prob 4-5 other tables at 7:00 pm.
